Panel Discussion on Drug and Alcohol Abuse

 

TVI continued its Speaker Series on Drug and Alcohol Abuse by hosting a session at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) on Friday the 7 of July 2023 and was attended by 150 participants and  was the first of four  similar events planned for UPNG.

The event featured a screening of a Youth Tok episode on Alcohol Abuse and a panel discussion to further unpack the issue. The panel included Dr. Glen Mola ,the Professor of ObGyn & Reproductive Health at UPNG School of Medical & Health Sciences, Barbara Thomas Elias the Senior Programs Manager for The Voice Inc. (TVI) and Gloria Mabiria the 2023, UPNG SRC Female Vice President.

Dr. Mola spoke on the negative impacts of alcohol, betelnut and tobacco, urging participants to avoid consuming such substances. He spoke candidly about the difficulty in accessing treatment for side effects of substance abuse, noting that certain conditions such as liver cirrhosis could not be treated within Papua New Guinea.

Other reflections from the panel included the need for collective action when trying to address the issue of drug and alcohol abuse, all panellists agreeing that the heath sector, higher education and civil society were all stakeholders that needed to work together.

The Clean Gen thanked all the UPNG students, partners and community members who participated in this speaker series and invited all who joined the panel discussion for this event to sign online petition calling for a reform in laws related to the use and abuse of alcohol and drugs.

Clean Generation Campaign for Students

  Clean Generation Campaign For Students   The Voice Inc. (TVI)n an organization closely associated with Youth Against Corruption   Association (YACA), has hosted the Clean Generation Campaign. The Clean Generation Campaign has a nationwide campaign aimed at creating a movement of young people who are Purposeful, Virtuous and Responsible. The clean- a –thon signifies youths wanting to change in their lives and their country. Students from the University of Papua New Guinea were there to show their support, hope and longing for a new and changed PNG.   The program kicked off on Monday 21 st of August 2022, with the Lets Talk Cancer Day with Special Guest from the Papua New Guinea Cancer Foundation during awareness on cancer. Health and Hygiene Project

                                    Clean Gen Funds a Sanitary, Health and Hygiene Project   The Voice Inc. (TVI) through the Clean Gen Innovation Grants Program funded a Sanitary Bin Project at the University of Papua New Guinea and is initiated by the 2023 Vice President of UPNG, Miss Gloria Mabiria. Lead by the UPNG Male Vice President of 2022, Mr Hulbert Maleva, the project falls under the grants thematic area of health and wellbeing of Clean Gen. Through the grant funding, the UPNG SRC Project Committee were able to purchase thirty three (33) Wheely Bins, Labels and Bin Bags for this project. The sanitary bins have been installed in the female residential halls on the UPNG Campus. A total grant funding of Ten Thousand Kina (K10 000) was awarded for this project.
